Ben Mortiz is a prominent Afro-descendant musician, bassist, producer, and sociologist. His work is characterized by a distinctive Afro-Latin fusion that incorporates elements of Funk, Jazz, and House, creating original and captivating rhythms around the electric bass. Recognized for his virtuoso technique, dynamics, and musical sensitivity, each of his compositions and performances reflects not only his skill as an instrumentalist, but also his artistic and cultural vision, bringing a unique and vibrant approach to the current music scene.
His musical career began at the age of 8, while he was living in the city of Arica, north of Chile. His first instrument was the guitar, with which he participated in school workshops. Later, at the age of 12, he meet the electric bass and took it as his definitive instrument, being part of school and local bands and working on his first studio recording sessions.
In 2019, he founded Fallen Lab Records, a studio and artistic production label, marking the beginning of a prolific creative stage. His first album, "Mortiz" released on October 1, 2021, presented a sonic journey between soft and intense landscapes, with fresh percussions and the unmistakable prominence of the electric bass. This work received praise from renowned international bassists such as Benny Rietveld and Steve Bailey, positioning him as a promising figure in the music scene.
Without rest and continuing his creative work, On May 6, 2022, Mortiz presents his new artistic journey with a production of visual and adventurous purpose; “Sangre Virtual”, a record that fusions Funk, House and electronic , marking an aesthetic distance from his first album of "Jazz Fusión" . Presenting a new creative state for the artist.
In 2024, Ben Mortiz took a new step in his career with “Moreno”, an album released on May 24th that reaffirms his ability to fuse Afro-Latin elements in an original and profound way. This work, acclaimed by the international press, stands out as a work representative of his style and originality. That same year, Mortiz was inducted into the Latin Recording Academy, recognizing his artistic contribution to Latin Music, at the same time, this album was taking in consideration for the Latin Grammy Awards 2025 in the category “Best Latin Jazz Album”
